Catatumbo lightning 

Enjoy of of the most strange natural phenomenon by the Maracaibo Lake, the largest of Southamerica. Perfect for birdwatching and butterflies observation.

Day One

Leaving Merida early in the morning we will first visit the ancient cane sugar factories on the way to Lagunillas. We will see how locals prepare a chewing past called “Chimo” and get to see different coffee and cocoa plantations on the Andes foothill. After lunch, we will arrive to the hot Maracaibo basin.   After embarking a fishermen boat we will go into Mangroves, swamps, gallery forests and open lake to observe wildlife as Red howler monkeys,  Freshwater grey dolphins, iguanas and flocks of birds. We sleep out in the lake on a stilt house known as "Palafito" in hammocks. All night one will be able to see the phenomena of the Catatumbo lightning while enjoying a tasty dinner.

 
Day Two
After breakfast we will visit the rain forest of the western Andes that are as impressive as the Amazon jungle. Jungle trek for a couple of hours.   Butterfly photo safari guided by our expert guide. Lunch and drive to Mérida through La Azulita and Jají villages enjoying the views of different waterfalls along the way within the dense cloud forest of the Andes foothill.
