Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival to Bogotá, Colombia

Arrival to EL Dorado airport in Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia at 2600 meters (8530.1837 feet) above sea level and which is quickly becoming one of the Latin American urban highlights with more than 7 million inhabitants. Meet our representative at the airport and Check in at your hotel in the city located in the old historical district of La Candelaria surrounded by plenty of cafes, museums and churches.

Day 2. Bogotá City Tour

We begin our second day with a fueling breakfast at the hotel, then we’re off to enjoy a tour of the city, starting with a ride on the world-famous Bogota cable car. You will enjoy breathtaking views of the city and surrounding nature as the cars climb 3160 meters to the peak of Cerro Monserrate (10,367 feet). We will then walk trough the historical suburb of La Candelaria, with its old churches and cobblestoned streets, surrounded by colonial architecture, baroque churches art deco houses, and street art. We will visit Plaza Bolivar and its stunning Cathedral. We will also visit the Museo del Oro (The Gold Museum) to see the most iconic and amazing gold artifacts of Colombia, and Fernando Botero’s permanent exhibition at the Banco de la República. For lunch you will be on your own and provided with ample time to explore and sample the incredible tastes of the city. Transfer to the airport and Flight to Santa Marta in the afternoon. Airport pick up and overnight at Masaya Santa Marta or similar in the old downtown. (B)

Day 3. Santa Marta- Camp Site #1

After meeting you at your hotel in Santa Marta at 815am, we will ride in a jeep for about 45 minutes on the highway. We will stop at a convenience store to buy snacks and drinks, and from there, we turn off the highway, up a dirt track into the mountains. After arriving in Machete, we will have lunch and then have a short swim to cool off. Then we hike a steep uphill grade for around 45 minutes before a long descent into the valley where the first campsite, is located. 

(B, L,D) (1⁄2 day hiking to Adán – 7.6 km (4.7 mi) 1,900 ft ascent, 900 ft descent)

 

Lost City Colombia

Day 4. Camp Site #1 – Camp Site #3

The 15 kms/10 hours route starts along the Buritaca River, taking you further into the vivid green jungle past small villages en route to the evening campsite. We will walk uphill and across some beautiful terrain, including some local farms. After a jump in a swimming hole and lunch at Camp Site #2 we will continue to Paraiso Camp (Camp Site #3), located only 1km downhill from the Lost City. Today’s journey takes you through a varied landscape, deeper into the tropical jungle, across rivers and past a couple of Kogi villages.

Day 5. The Lost City

We will wake up at about 530A.M so we can can set off at dawn and enjoy the Lost City in the softest light and coolest air possible. After a short walk from the campsite, we will reach the 1,200 stone stairs that ascend to the terraces of the city above. Climbing the steps, we will reach the lower chambers of Teyuna, also known as The Lost City. It is believed that this was a capital city built by the Tayrona civilization in 800 A.D., approximately 600 years before the Incas built Machu Picchu in Peru. When conquistadores approached the structure in the 16th century, the Tayrona opted to abandon the city instead of allowing it to fall into Spanish hands. After visiting the Lost City, we’ll return to El Paraiso (Campsite #3) for a quick lunch before returning to Campsite #2 for overnight.

Day 6. Camp Site #2 – Santa Marta

We will start early again, since much of the trail is unshaded, and therefore becomes quite hot. After a stop for fruit at the first campsite and a jump in the swimming hole, we’ll find ourselves back where we began, in Machete, for lunch. We will drive back to Santa Marta to end this exciting trek , arrival at about 330-430pm. Overnight at standard hotel or similar. (B,L)

1⁄2 day hiking to El Mamey, Return to Santa Marta – 12.7 km (7.9 mi) 2200 ft ascent, 3000 ft descent.

Day 7. Santa Marta-Puerto Ordaz

Flight from Santa Marta to Bogota early in the morning and connecting to Puerto Ordaz (Venezuela) via Caracas at 9am. (Layover at Caracas Airport with a possibility of an optional City Tour). Arrival to 830pm. Meet our representative at Puerto Ordaz airport and overnight at standard hotel nearby the airport.
No dinner included.

Day 8. Puerto Ordaz- Gran Sabana- Santa Elena de Uairén

Breakfast and 700 kms drive to Santa Elena de Uairén with a few stops along the way. After we cross the misty dense jungle road of Sierra de Lema find the stunning Gran Sabana located in the Eastern sector of Canaima National Park with views of the Tepuys Valley, Kama Falls and its inmense Savannahs. Dinner and overnight at rustic camp with beds and private bathroom.

Day 9. Santa Elena- Parai Tepui
– Tek River

We will drive for about 2 hours from Santa Elena de Uairen to Parai Tepuy (1600 above sea level) to hike nearly 5 hours through open savannah before reaching the Kukenan Camp at a height of 1050m. You will cross two rivers which can be difficult when the Kukenan grows after rainfall. Our guide and porters will set up the camp for a nice dinner in the foothill of Roraima. (5 hours hiking, all meals).

Day 10. Tek River-Roraima base camp

Today we will hike 9kms to the base camp of Roraima located at 1850 meters above the sea level
including a challenging walk of around two hours. Cross lowland savannah and beautiful landscapes covered with orchids and fascinating plant life and enjoy spectacular views of the walls of the mountain before taking a refreshing swim in the river nearby the camp. (about 5 hours hiking, all meals).

Day 11. Roraima base camp to the top

We will have a steep hike for about 3 hours (1,5 kms) through the jungle as we reach the top of The Lost World at 2700m. Afterwards we will be exhausted and amazed by the beauty and the overwhelming number of ferns, bromeliads and other rare plants.   The sheer wall of Roraima is ahead, and its tough climb to the summit at 2700m. The path continues through jungle and on to the plateau, where there is time to explore with fascinating views of interesting rock shapes as result of 2 Billion years of erosion. The prehistoric and unusual plants up here are a wonder to behold. Some of the surface looks like walking on the moon and the views from the Summit piercing through the fog are unbelievable. Our tents will be set up in natural caves for 2 nights, providing protection from the frequent mists and showers on top.

Day 12. Roraima top

We will explore the fantasy land atop Roraima whose massive summit is 45 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide. We will visit the Crystal Valley where we find strange and beautiful quartz rocks, we will also see the Gran Sabana and Kukenan Tepui window, enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural jacuzzi with red, sand and golden colors on its waters. We will relax and get ready for the descend of 7 hours. Overnight in tents set in a natural cavity.

Day 13. Roraima top and Triple Point: Brazil, Guyana & Venezuela

After breakfast, we will visit one of the most unknown áreas of Roraima top. It is “Triple Point” where Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana meet after crossing a bizarre landscape, hiking up and down, crossing creeks and boggy terrain, passing through natural labyrinths. Overnight in tents set in a natural cavity.
(Note: This part of Roraima can only be guaranteed in a 7 days excursion)

Day 14. Roraima base camp to Tek River

Today we will hike down 10,5 kms for about 7 hours to Tek river enjoying some of the last views of the walls of Roraima.

Day 15. Tek River –Santa Elena

We will walk about 4 hours to Parai Tepuy where will be collected to get driven back to Santa Elena. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable posada.

Day 16. Santa Elena-Puerto Ordaz

Day 16.  Breakfast and drive back to Puerto Ordaz. Arrival at about 6pm.  Overnight at standard hotel in town.

Day 17. Puerto Ordaz Caracas

Breakfast and flight to Caracas at 7am.  Arrival at 8am.
