Bone Up on Great Fishing in Los Roques

The crystal Caribbean water of Los Roques ripples slightly. You cast your fly gracefully through the air to where you’ve spotted the tailing gray ghost. The moment’s serenity is shattered, as your screaming reel announces that a trophy bonefish is on its way to Trinidad. It’s just another day in paradise at Los Roques. Eighty miles off the Venezuelan mainland, hundreds of islands form the archipelago that has become mecca for fly fishing fanatics. Your seasoned guide will lead you to pristine flats to stalk legions of bonefish averaging 4 pounds and occasionally running into double digits. The mangrove lagoons and coral reefs also teem with permit, tarpon, barracuda and a plethora of other fish. You’ll stay in a clean guest lodge, enjoying great seafood, swimming and snorkeling.

Fishing Program
Venezuela's National Park Service has limited fishing permits to 12 anglers a day, guaranteeing the long-term prosperity of this undisturbed angling paradise. Our guides are seasoned professionals, specializing in fly fishing and light-tackle. They will lead you to a different area each day depending on your preference and fishing conditions. You'll fish from early morning until mid-afternoon, leaving plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling or just relaxing. Fishing is done either from small skiffs or by wading knee-deep along remote sand-flats. These flats range from 100 yards to miles long, and offer ideal shallow-water wading conditions on hard sand. Record size barracudas and a variety of reef fish prowl the edges of many of the flats, including grouper, snapper and king mackerel, offering more challenges and variety.

Heavy tropical downpours can occur even during the "dry season" so be sure to pack a rainsuit. Humidity in the tropics can play havoc with cameras or other electronic devices. Daytime highs can reach the 90s, but the gentle sea breeze and clear wading waters lessen the impact. Temperatures drop into the 70s at night. The sun is intense, so the greatest risk is sunburn. Pack protective clothing and sun cream.
